Guys advice?? How can you tell if he is being honest?

Ok here is the situation I'm in a relationship and an old flame found found through the grape vine how serious it is and has been telling me that it should of been us. He had a chance many years ago but was not ready for the commitment. I think he is being truth full with his feelings but it is hard to tell. How can I find out for sure??Guys advice??
