I live in Cincinnati and I need help buying a used vehicle my price range is anywhere between 1,000 and 3,000What advice can you guys give me about buying a used car?
look at craigslist.
also if it sounds too good to be true, (ie a car with only 3000 miles for $1000) then it is probably stolen. don't buy that one obviously!
see if you can meet up with the person who's car you are interested in and then decide. What advice can you guys give me about buying a used car?
Try http://www.iSeeCars.com - it's a search engine where you can search $1,000-3,000 used cars from thousands of websites. When I last checked, there were over 75,000 vehicles within that price range for sale.
Also, here's a good article about the pros and cons of buying used cars from a dealership or private party --- http://blog.iseecars.com/2008/08/28/pros鈥?/a>
I have owned 23 DIFFERENT cars in 10 years, two of them being NEW cars and 4 of the 23 from car dealerships.
The most reliable car I have owned out of 23 cars was a 1990 Nissan Sentra. It was a Base model. Everything was manual--manual transmission, manual door locks, manual windows, manual mirrors, NO power steering, NO power brakes, and it came from the factory with only 2 car speakers and NO driver side mirror! Bought it for $3,000 when it had only 80,000 miles and sold it at 160,000 miles--the only thing I ever had to repair was the thermostat. Tires, brakes, and oil changes are very cheap!
With your price range, I would try to find a good, well-kept nissan sentra, but only years 1990-1993. The reliability of the sentras from 1994 and up sucks. AND ONE MORE PIECE OF ADVICE---NEVER, AND I MEAN NEVER BUY A CAR FROM A CAR DEALERSHIP--I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE SCREWED THEN BUYING FROM A CAR DEALERSHIP. YOU GET A SH!TTY CAR, SH!TTY PRICE OR BOTH!
Buy from craigslist.com and if you don't know how to test drive a car correctly and look out for obvious problems, then either take someone with who knows cars or take it to the mechanic before you buy it. If you don't know what to look out for when test driving a car, you can get screwed real quick. One thing I have noticed from private party sales that is very true---NO ONE SELLS A CAR THAT HAS ZERO PROBLEMS. IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU THAT THE CAR HAS NO PROBLEMS, THEN I CAN PROMISE YOU IT IS A LIE. EVERY CAR, BMW, FERRARRI WHATEVER USED CAR HAS AT LEAST A COUPLE PROBLEMS, SO YOU HAVE TO NEGOTIATE THE PRICE OR BETTER YET DON'T BUY A CAR WITH THE ENGINE ABOUT READY TO GO OUT!!!!! SORRY FOR THE CAPS BUT THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND I HAVE A LOT OF EXPERIENCE!!!
I have sold new and used vehicles for many years, I have seen many imports as well as domestic autos show reliability, and also the opposite. Do your home work on what ever vehicle you choose. You can check the history of the auto not only with a carfax report but you can also check to see how many times it has been to the dealer for certain problems, even repeatedly coming to service for the same problem (bad). I put together some tips on buying a used car. good luck.

Use the following 'sites for info on car pricing and reliability :
www.edmunds.com
www.kbb.com
If you buy from the internet ( NOT advised ) be sure you can see the vehicle in person before you buy...too many people ripped off thru craigslist, ebay, etc.
